Spring is when Perth lawns wake up. Warmer days speed growth, but weeds and fungal problems arrive with it. Getting the basics right now sets the lawn up for summer.
Feed for colour and roots
A nitrogen-rich lawn fertiliser lifts colour and drives new growth as the soil warms. An iron supplement helps hold a deep green. Water it in after spreading.
Core compacted areas
Coring (aerating) lets water, air and fertiliser reach the roots, especially in high-traffic areas. Spring is the right time, while the lawn is growing strongly enough to recover.
Get on top of winter weeds
Bindii and clover are still around in early spring. Remove them before they seed, and keep mowing regularly so the lawn thickens up and crowds them out.
Start deep watering
As the rain eases, switch to deep morning watering on your rostered days. It trains roots to go deeper before the heat arrives. A wetting agent before summer helps the water soak in.
Keep the leaves off
Rake up fallen gum and wattle leaves regularly so the lawn can breathe. They're good in the compost.
