The warm days and spring rain that bring new growth also bring pests. Aphids, whiteflies, caterpillars and powdery mildew are all common in Perth gardens at this time of year, and they spread quickly if left alone.
Aphids and whiteflies
These sap-sucking insects leave curled leaves and weak growth, and can spread plant diseases. Insecticidal soap or neem oil sprays control them while being gentler on beneficial insects such as ladybirds.
Caterpillars
A small group of caterpillars can strip a plant in days. Pick them off by hand where you can, encourage birds into the garden, or use a targeted spray.
Powdery mildew
A white coating on leaves, worst in damp, shaded, crowded spots. It spreads fast across roses, vegetables and fruit trees. Improve airflow, water at the base rather than over the leaves, and use a sulphur-based spray when needed.
Prevention
- Check plants weekly. Catching pests early stops an outbreak.
- Plant a mix of species to attract beneficial insects.
- Avoid overwatering, which encourages fungal disease.
- Keep diseased leaves out of the compost.
